- What is Tarot
The origin of tarot cards is shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that they first appeared in Europe in the late 14th century in Italy as a game called Tarocchi. While the original purpose of tarot cards is unknown, it is clear that they were initially used for playing games. It wasn't until the 18th century that tarot cards began to be used for divination purposes. One of the most influential books on tarot is "The Pictorial Key to the Tarot" by A.E. Waite, which was published in 1910. In this book, Waite describes the symbolism of each card and provides instructions for conducting tarot readings. He writes, "The Tarot is a pack of cards in which are depicted symbols and allegories, and these convey a message." Another notable figure in the history of tarot is psychologist Carl Jung, who believed that tarot cards could be used as a tool for personal growth and self-discovery. He wrote, "The images of the Tarot are universally known archetypes that can help us understand ourselves better." Despite its long history, tarot has often been the subject of controversy and skepticism. Some people believe the cards are associated with witchcraft or the occult, while others view them as harmless entertainment. However, for those who use tarot as a tool for self-exploration and guidance, the cards can be a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation. One of the most well-known historical references to tarot comes from the French occultist and writer Éliphas Lévi, who said, "A prisoner devoid of books, had he only a tarot of which he knew how to use, could in a few years acquire a universal science, and converse with an unequalled doctrine and inexhaustible eloquence." This quote highlights the belief that tarot cards hold a wealth of knowledge and wisdom that can be accessed through careful study and interpretation. Another historical reference to tarot comes from the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung, who said, "The symbolic process is an essential function of the psyche, and tarot cards are a pictorial representation of the archetypes and universal themes that are part of that process." This quote speaks to the idea that tarot cards can be used to access the subconscious and gain insight into one's inner world.
